My Favorite Personal Brand Statement Examples

Finally, the perfect answer when someone asks, “So, what do you do?”

Finally, the perfect answer when someone asks, “So, what do you do?”

I’m fortunate to work with clients in every industry imaginable: journalism, dentistry, entrepreneurship, public speaking, blogging, and the list goes on.

And while my clients themselves are unique, 99% of the time they all have the same initial question when we start working together:

“How do I explain what I do?”

When you’re an expert (or heck, even an inspiring expert), you wear a lot of hats. You’re good at many things, which is what makes it so hard to explain your expertise succinctly.

Before I work with a client on an ongoing basis, I start all working relationships with a brand audit with the intent of figuring out that individual’s personal brand statement. For inspiration, below are some of my all-time favorite personal brand statements.

Iza, Brazilian Popstar

“I’m a Grammy-nominated Brazilian artist who knows that powerful music affects emotions, changes perceptions, and transforms cultures.”

As one of Brazil’s biggest pop stars (who voiced Nala in the Brazilian version of Disney’s The Lion King last year), her team is determined to share her empowering and catchy music with the world. When we worked on Iza’s personal brand statement together, we wanted people to understand that Iza isn’t a surface performer. Her music unites racial tensions in her home country and empowers women to be strong on their own terms.

Adelaide Goodeve, Triathlete Mindset Coach

“I’m a mindset coach who teaches triathletes how to achieve extraordinary performance. Your mental fitness matters more than physical.”

Adelaide’s personal brand statement exercise was fascinating. As someone who went from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to competing as an amateur triathlete, Adelaide had unlocked the secret to overcoming exhaustion and becoming a good competitor. When we decided her personal brand statement, we wanted to reiterate her role as a mindset coach for triathletes and paint a picture of the results achieved when you work with her.

Liz Josefsberg, Weight Loss Coach

“I’m a weight loss coach, speaker, and author who helps people lose weight in a real, lasting way.”

If you’re remotely plugged into celebrity lifestyle, then chances are that you’ve come across Liz’s work. Liz is the weight loss coach behind public figures like Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Simpson, Charles Barkley, and Katie Couric. After leaving WeightWatchers as an executive, Liz created her own diet program Target100, so she needed a refreshed personal brand statement that speaks to her values.

Shomari White, Pastor and Writer

“I’m a speaker, writer, and pastor who helps people find, build, and develop meaningful relationships in business and life.”

Pastor Shomari White (affectionately known in his community as Pastor Sho) approached me for a brand audit to kickstart a new phase of his career. Pastor Sho has founded a successful church and is ready to share his guidance to a broader audience through writing. We created a personal brand statement that opens up his philosophy to all faiths and disciplines so he’s positioned to target a broader market.
